Abstract. The authors analyse the new metaphors in the mediatext, suggest the typology of their origin-spheres and give several examples. They also introduce the term "metaphor of the XXI century" and explain its meaning. This topic is considered in the aspect of teaching Russian to foreigners. When we read mediatexts, our primary pedagogical task is to teach students how to interpret it. The pragmatic potential of the metaphor gives the teacher the opportunity to teach foreign speakers to get into the idea of the author of the text, thus forming their metaphorical competence. The article suggests the principles of working with publicistic text containing a metaphor in a foreign-language audience.
Keywords: Russian for foreigners, the metaphorical competence, mediatext, the XXI century metaphor, a foreign learner, algorithm, interpretation.
